Caption: Illuminated manuscript. Illuminated manuscript page of money being paid. The bags are being put into a secure chest whilst a scribe (at bottom left) notes the amount paid. During the middle ages, book illumination with hand-drawn images was considered a high art, with gold leaf being used with paints of animal, plant or mineral origins. The images also helped to describe events to the illiterate. During the middle ages, merchant families stored valuables, lent money & arranged the transfer of funds.
